Downend Amateur Boxing Club – New Home at Harry Crook Centre Fishponds
Plans to regenerate the former Oldbury Court Community centre in Fishponds to house Downend amateur boxing club have unfortunately been abandoned in favour of another solution.
Project leader Craig Turner explains ‘Despite many hours of voluntary work and in kind contributions from local business, the weather and damage already sustained to the building has taken its toll which, unfortunately has put any hope of regeneration out of reach.
It has taken Downend two years to bring the project to this stage, the process of which our volunteers enjoyed and worked so well to achieve, gaining a fantastic amount of knowledge along the way whilst hopefully, making the building more secure and nicer to live around during our time.’
The club are disappointed however, our efforts have led to another option which, is immediately achievable a short distance away.
Happy Dayz pre-school have just acquired the lease for the former Harry Crook Youth Activities Centre in Moorlands Road in Fishponds, and Downend Boxing Club in partnership will be housed permanently at the centre.
Formally the site of Bristol 5 Boys Club, the historic significance of the site will be honoured being that Downend are members of former Boy’s clubs federation Young Bristol also sustaining positive diversionary activities through the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain.
Bristol City Council handed over the lease of their building to Happy Dayz pre-school to fill the shortfall in early years child care however, the dedicated space set aside for the boxing club will provide a state of the art facility which, will host not only the hugely successful competitive boxing club, but adult classes and affordable keep fit provision.
It is hoped that the boxing club will be operational at the site from early February and already has gained success having been awarded a £5,581 Sport England grant award which will provide 2 new boxing rings for the new facility.
